Eliza Foy of Hawera was my great-grandmother and it is with surprise and some pride I find her here on this petition. Her mother died of complications in childbirth when Eliza was 6 years old. Eliza was a spinster when she signed this, she went on to marry my great-grandfather Manley John Ashwin and have 8 children. One of whom became Sir Bernard Ashwin, and another Dorrie Ashwin - my grandmother, who later married and had three children, one of whom was my father.
