Petronella Torstonson and her husband Nils emigrated from Malm, Sweden and settled in New Zealand in 1875.

They had six sons, two of whom died in childhood. Another two died in the 1918 flu epidemic, as did Nils. The wife of one of the sons also died, leaving a young family parentless. Then aged 70, Petronella took on the care of the older daughter and the two sons, while one of her surviving sons and his wife raised the youngest daughter.

Petronella died in Palmerston North in 1924, aged 76.
