The Whyte family were one of the founding families of the Halkett area in Selwyn, Canterbury where Emma Whyte signed the petition. Born Emma Elizabeth Davis in 1864, she was the daughter of another early settler founder of Halkett, Mr A.E. Davis. She married Adam Whyte, a farmer known for his success in ploughing competitions and his prize-winning draughthorses. On the 1893 electoral roll she is listed as Emma Elizabeth Whyte and her occupation is given as 'domestic duties'.
