Noel Woolf tells us that 'the memorial gate and the wrought iron work was given in memory of Capt W.O. Berryman, M.C. Military Cross - the first to be given to a NZ soldier. Capt Berryman died on coming back to NZ from America in 1921 (too late to be added to the memorial). If you look at the photo of the memorial before it was shifted you will see plaques attached to the gate, unfortunately someone removed them and so far we have been unsuccessful in tracking them down.'

There is a re-dedication of the kohatu war memorial 12 July 2009 the whole monument has been restored and the names are now clearly readable.

The original Memorial was unveiled by Mr. Harry Atmore, M.P. 12.7.1921. See photo FNJ 25686 Nelson Provincial Museum. Norma,a neice of Pte.E.A.Coleman

These are the names on the memorial In Grateful Memory Lt S Berryman L.C R Arnold L.C G Nalder Spr H L Ellis Pvt F Biggs Pvt E.A. Coleman Pvt W.I Gibbs Pvt C.S Hooper Pvt E.W.L Mead Pvt R.S Mead Pvt N.H Wilkinson who gave their lives for the liberty and honour of the British Empire in the Great War 1914-1918 Also .....? 1939-1945 Lt Wm King F Sgt C.C Piper Pvt A.H Grindle Pvt C.O Nisbett Names were becoming hard to read on my last visit there.
