Greymouth school war memorial, c. 1986.
These war memorial pillars have now found a new home in Dixon Park, Greymouth. They were removed from the school by developers and were eventually rescued from Arahura, 32km south of Greymouth, on 10 January 2008. The re-erected pillars were unveiled on Anzac Day 2009.

In a local controversy in late 2007, the memorial pillars in front of the old Grey Main school were removed from the site, and laid down in front of Dixon Park, a few hundred metres away. I have recorded the site where the pillars are missing as well as them lying on the ground at Dixon Park.
The pillars were apparently a memorial to former Greymouth District High School pupils killed in the First World War. When the high school moved to a different site, this site was occupied by Grey Main School, which subsequently closed.
