Farming locality in the rolling hillcountry on the eastern side of Mt Horrible, 13km west of Timaru. Originally part of the large Levels Station extending from the Opihi River to the Pareora River.

Meaning of place name
Part of the original Levels station owned by the Rhodes family, it was named by George Heaton Rhodes (1815-84) after Claremont estate in Esher, Surrey, England.
