doyleston

Farming township on the Canterbury Plains, 5km to the west of Lake Ellesmere, 3km north-east of Leeston.

Meaning of place name
The name was given for Joseph Doyle, a Cobb & Co. driver who settled here in the 1860s and laid out the town sections. On 1 May 1882 the Railways Department changed the name to Cheddar, in acknowledgement of the local dairy industry, but the residents objected so strenuously that the name reverted to Doyleston on 1 October of the same year.
