34 km south of Ōamaru. A camping ground was established after the First World War, and tourist-oriented businesses have operated since the 1980s.

Meaning of place name
Named by the district surveyor Walter Mantell after the seventeenth-century English statesman, John Hampden. In 1861 an accommodation house called the Hampden Hotel was in existence, and this probably influenced Mantell's choice.
