porangahau

Coastal settlement east of Dannevirke. Pōrangahau and its river was an important site of Māori settlements. The first European runholders arrived in the early 1850s and the township was founded by the government in 1860.

Meaning of place name
Pō: night; rangahau: pursuit. The inhabitants of Heretaunga once had to make a hurried retreat from their enemies at this place.
