waikaka

Township 28km north-east of Gore. Gold was discovered in the vicinity in 1867, and by 1873 there were about 800 miners working the area, the majority of them Chinese. After a decline, renewed attempts in the area retrieved over £1 million worth of gold between 1897 and 1926.
