waimangaroa

A small mining and milling town, 17 km north of Westport, at the foot of the winding road up to Denniston.

Meaning of place name
Wai: river; manga: tributary; roa: long. The name may properly be Waimanguroa: Long black river. Decayed vegetable matter was brought down by the river and deposited in a lagoon by the coast, the water presenting a marked contrast to the clear water of the river.
