James Crowe Richmond

James Crowe Richmond

Portrait of James Crowe Richmond, engineer, artist, politician and journalist. Taken by an unknown photographer between 1880 and 1898. During the Taranaki War Richmond served as a Provincial Councillor (his brother was the Native Minister).

Reacting to the disruption of the Waitara survey, Richmond stated that the aim had not been ‘to convict a parcel of women and old men of a misdemeanor but to provoke the chiefs to fight … up to the actual point of defiance of the Government, i.e. High Treason’.

Historian Ranginui Walker has described Richmond as a ‘European supremacist who had no qualms about instigating an unjust war against people whom he referred to in private as "niggers"’.
