Lieutenant-Commander Peter Phipps was lucky to escape with only minor injuries when a Japanese bomb plunged through his cabin on the HMNZS Moa. Knighted after the war, Phipps went on to become Chief of Naval Staff and then New Zealand’s first Chief of Defence Staff.
