Arrived Wellington 50 years ago on 15th November 1958 .
Extract from last page of diary kept on voyage......
Our 5 weeks of bliss and enjoyment, laziness and sunshine, friendships and compaionships, fun and games, wind and sea, the journeying onwards day after day, had come to a sad end. Now we must settle to 2 years of life in a new land

I voyaged to New Zealand on the Captain Cook with my 25 year old mother, arriving Wellington 8th April 1953. I found us both on a passenger manifest on one of my visits to the archives held in Wellington. She recounted stories of the voyage, breaking down mid-journey, not being allowed to associate with the crew referred to as lascars, and the taxing supervision of her curious two year-old, myself. Arriving at Glasgow Wharf, Wellington to a requested meal of 'kidneys on toast', unheard of in rationed UK, to be met by my father who had travelled out earlier on the Captain Hobson, and a bus up the Foxton Straits to the seaside outpost of Foxton Beach. Dad was in Wellington at the time as part of the military guard of honour for the opening of parliament on that day, so we have a good reference date.
