Victoria Cross (VC) recipient Lloyd Trigg, circa 1939–1943. The New Zealand bomber pilot earned the award for sinking a German submarine off the coast of West Africa in August 1943. Although Trigg and his crew perished during the attack, evidence from German survivors saw him recommended for a posthumous VC.
