In August 1959, the Home of Compassion Crèche featured on the cover of the national Catholic newspaper, New Zealand Tablet, with this caption:
Our Cover Picture: This very beautiful child study was made at the Wellington creche, which is conducted by the Sisters of Compassion. In France the Christmas crib is also called a creche, but the word also means a children's home. When, therefore, the Sisters of Compassion opened in Wellington a day nursery where working mothers could leave their children in competent hands, the French term used by Mother Mary Joseph Aubert was used and so it is called to-day. An institution of this kind is a blessing in these days when so many mothers are forced by circumstances to work outside their homes.
