The Port Caroline (constucted 1968) was one of the last conventional freighters built for the New Zealand run. The vessel quickly became a white elephant. Although it was fitted with every modern device (and Wellington’s elegant Stothert & Pitt wharf cranes were quite new, too), the use of cargo slings made loading and discharging slow and labour-intensive.
