Wellington series by Don Peebles

Wellington series (No. 16/60), 1960, by Don Peebles.

Don Peebles (1922–2010) spent his early and middle years in Wellington and took lessons at the Wellington Technical School of Art. He moved to Sydney in 1951 and studied at the Julian Ashton School. Under the influence of tutors such as John Passmore, one of the leading exponents of modernist art in Australia, Peebles developed a more progressive style. On his return to Wellington in 1954 he began to exhibit abstract paintings at venues like the Architectural Centre.

The Wellington series is based on his response to the harbour environment.
