Port Chalmers in 2006. The wharves and dry docks (compare with the port in the 1950s) have been replaced by two berths – the later multi-purpose berth is to the right – and a heavy-duty paved space for storing, washing and devanning (unpacking) containers.

Terminals have facilities for unpacking LCLs (less than container loads – boxes used by a variety of small customers), but because port land is very expensive to create, big companies save money by taking full containers elsewhere before unloading them.
