OBITUARY. Mrs Joseph Barrott, aged 76 years

Early this morning Mrs Joseph Barrott died at her residence in Bakerstown. She had only been seriously ill a few weeks, and as little hopes were entertained of her recovery the various members of the family were sent for, and most of them were present when she passed away. She leaves a husband, and bad reared a family of four sons and seven daughters, one son and one daughter being dead. She also leaves 37grandchildren and 88 great grandchildren. Had she lived until Saturday next she would have been able to have celebrated her diamond wedding, having been married in Warwickshire, England, on the 22nd February, 60 years ago. Mrs Barrott was paralysed down the left side 29 years ago, and notwithstanding this great handicap was able to do her home work until a month ago. She was a dear old lady, and was beloved by all who had the pleasure of her acquaintance.

Mr and Mr Barrott and family arrived at the Gorge just 39 years ago. Mr Barrott was brought out under engagement to burn lime in the Gorge for the Manchester Block Corporation. Mr Barrott also burned the lime that was used in the building of the bridge in the Gorge. It is worthy of note, too, that Mr Barrott was employed by Messrs Nelson Bros, in Warwickshire 55 years ago.

The funeral of the late Mrs Barrott takes place at the Woodville Cemetery on Friday afternoon at 8 o’clock.

Mother of Bessie Barrot, who also signed Sheet 499 of the suffrage petition.

The photo of Eliza and Joseph Barrott hangs on our wall. My mother was Lois Barrott, her father Walter Barrott ,his father John(Jack), his father Joseph. It is always interesting to read of our forebears. This article will be added to the family photo. My grandfather Walter married while working on the Wanganui River. He move north to near Kaikohe with his brother where they purchased land for timber milling. Walter later established the Waipu Timber Company when he moved to Waipu in the 1930's.
