Biography contributed by Vivienne Morrell

Elizabeth Deadman (née Jones) was born on 8 May 1839 in Preston Capes, Northamptonshire, England and emigrated with her parents, Henry (1811-1902) and Mary (1814-1895) Jones and three siblings to Wellington, New Zealand, in 1842. In the 1840s they lived in Karori, Wellington and in about 1852 moved to Lower Hutt. Finally, the Jones family moved to Masterton in 1856.

On 6 July 1863 Elizabeth married William Deadman (1839-1919) in Dunedin where William’s sister’s family lived. Elizabeth and William had eight children – all sons. The first was born in Dunedin, the rest in Masterton. William died in Ohakune in 1919 and Elizabeth died in Masterton on 17 May 1920 and is buried in Masterton.

Elizabeth Deadman is the sister of Charlotte Shute and a sister-in-law of Mary Anne Jones and Mary Sophia Jones.
