Biography contributed by Vivienne Morrell:
Charlotte Shute (née Jones) was born on 6 December 1852 in Lower Hutt to parents Henry (1811-1902) and Mary (1814-1895) Jones. In 1856 the family moved to Masterton – the two youngest girls (including Charlotte) being carried in a box on either side of a bullock cart. [1]
On 29 December 1870 Charlotte married George Shute (1842-1925). In the 1880s George was in a store and cartage business with Charlotte’s brother James Jones, but this was dissolved by mutual consent in 1885 or 1886. [2]
Charlotte and George had 12 children. Charlotte died on 24 January 1905 and is buried in Masterton. [3]
Charlotte's sister Elizabeth, and sisters-in-law Mary Anne Jones and Mary Sophia Jones, also signed the 1893 suffrage petition.
