Biographical information provided by Lynly Yates for the He Tohu exhibition:

Annie Zeruiah was born in 1841 at Droxford, Hampshire in England to Lucy and William Hammond.  In 1851 Annie was residing in the village of Droxford with her parents and siblings William, Alfred, James and Emma.  In 1865 Annie Zeruiah Hammond married Zephaniah Mark Hoar at Portsea Island Hampshire.  In 1871 their family including children Alfred Charles, Albert George and Annie Amelia resided at Rochurch Cottage in Catherington, Hampshire.  The family departed England and by 1890 were residing in Masterton where Annie’s husband was a carpenter and later an undertaker.  Annie, her daughter Annie Amelia, and daughter-in-law Mary all signed the 1893 Suffrage Petition.  Annie Hoar appeared on the 1893 and 1896 Masterton electoral rolls.  Annie died 1 January 1926 and was buried in the Archer Street pioneer cemetery in Masterton.  Her husband Zephaniah Mark died 20 September 1928 and was buried next to his wife.
