Mary was born about 1869 to parents Mary (nee Tonder) and Philip Johnston. In 1892 Mary Johnston married Alfred Hoar in New Zealand. Their children were Stanley Alfred born 1893 and Reta Margaret born 1894. In 1893 Mary signed the 1893 suffrage petition along with her mother-in-law Annie Zeuriah and sister –in-law Annie Amelia. Mary’s husband occupation was an upholster / house furnisher and they resided in 7 Wrigley Street and later 58 Church Street, Masterton. Alfred Hoar died in 1946 and in 1956 Mary Hoar died.
