Mary Dickson/Dixon was born on November 17th 1854 in Dunbartonshire, Scotland, the daughter of James Dickson, a tailor, and Jane Duncan.

She married carpenter Alexander Johnston, son of Rachel Johnston in 1877.

They had a daughter before they emigrated to Otago in 1880 on the Nelson. Their son was born on board the ship.

They settled in Dunedin where they had a further eight children. When Mary signed the suffrage petition they were living in Paterson St, Mornington.

Mary died at her home in Mornington on April 16th 1931, and Alexander died in 1941. They are buried in the family grave in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
