Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Emily Jane Waugh was born in 1869 in New Zealand – the daughter of Thomas Waugh, a gardener, and Emily Jane Salsbury. (See 362 Emily Jane Waugh)

In 1887 Emily married Henry Goodwin Kingsland, the widower of her older sister Sarah, who had two children.

Emily and Henry had one daughter who they named Sarah.

Two years later Henry died while in England. Henry had travelled there to 'be treated for an internal disorder of the head, supposed to have originated by his being thrown out of a spring-cart in town some years ago'.

When Emily signed the suffrage petition she was living near her mother in Ness St, Invercargill.

In the 1910s Emily moved to the Nelson area, possibly to be near her children.

She died at Nelson on 29 January 1943 and is buried in the St Alban’s Appleby Churchyard near Nelson.
