Elizabeth Ann Richards was born in 1848 in Sithney, Cornwall – the daughter of John Richards, a tin miner, and Hannah Polkinghorne.
Elizabeth married Joseph Reed at Helston on 16 December 1873 and the next year they emigrated to New Zealand on the Duke of Edinburgh. They lived in Christchurch for a time before settling in Dunedin. They had four children. Their daughters Esther and Annie also signed the 1893 suffrage petition.
Joseph died in 1924 at their daughter’s residence in Timaru and Elizabeth also died in Timaru on 9 August 1925. They are buried together in the Northern Cemetery, Dunedin.
