Sarah Jane Sheppard was born about 1848.
In 1871 she, and her husband John Shirley, were living in Victoria, Australia where their daughter Florence was born.
The next year their son was born &, in February 1874, the family sailed for Lyttleton on the Otago.
They had a further 9 children, 2 who died in infancy, & when Sarah signed the suffrage petition the family were living in High St, Dunedin.
In 1896 they moved to Christchurch then to Dunback in North Otago in the early 1900’s.
John died at their home “Sunny Brow”, Dunback in 1915, he is buried in the Palmerston Cemetery.
Sarah died at Wellington on December 14th 1918, she is buried in the Karori Cemetery.
