Jane Dugdale was born about 1821 in Southwark, Surrey, England she married George Smith, a cordwainer, on 18 July 1842 at Holy Trinity Church, Clapham, Surrey.
They had two daughters before George died and Jane earned a living working as a midwife and looking after foster children.
She emigrated to Otago in 1877 on the Marlborough. Her daughter Julia also came to Otago (See 98 Julia Smith).
When Jane signed the suffrage petition she was living in Taieri Rd, Dunedin.
She died on 8 April 1912 and is buried with her daughter in the Northern Cemetery.
