Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Julia Sarah Smith was born in 1847 in Hereford, England – the daughter of George Smith, a cordwainer, and Jane Dugdale. (See 98 Jane Smith)

Her father died when she was young and she grew up in Rotherhithe, Surrey.

She married Edward Archibald Smith, a commercial clerk, in 1871. They do not appear to have had any children.

Julia and Edward emigrated to Otago about 1875 and settled in Dunedin.

Edward worked as a baker and they lived in the Kirkland Hill subdivision of Kaikorai.

Julia died on 24 December 1906, Edward re-married in 1909 and he died in 1918.

They are buried with Julia’s mother in the Northern Cemetery.
