Ellen Ward was born in 1868 in New Zealand – the daughter of Jonas Ward, a brewer, and Ann.

She attended Oamaru North school and in 1877 received a prize for reading.

Her father died in 1886 and when Ellen signed the suffrage petition she was living in Parkside, Caversham, Dunedin with her mother.

Ellen did not marry. She died on 2 June 1940 and is buried in the Andersons Bay Cemetery with her mother.
