Te Mātenga signed Te Tiriti at an unknown location on 15 June 1840. According to one of his descendants, he set up a flour mill with his father, Poharama Te Māhia, and they were keen on the trade opportunities that came with more settlers. Although in favour of Te Tiriti, they were against selling the land: ‘They wanted the trade and the relationships but they didn’t want to lose their base.’
