William Barnes Wollen, Observation Post, Winter, 1919. The New Zealand Division spent four months at Ypres (November 1917-February 1918) after the Passchendaele offensive, fighting the cold almost as much as the Germans. Yet shelling from German artillery and trench mortars, sniper fire and trench raids from both sides took a steady toll, costing the division nearly 3000 dead, wounded and missing.
