Disembarking at Suda Bay

New Zealand, Australian and British troops disembark at Suda Bay in Crete after their evacuation from mainland Greece, April 1941. By the end of April there were more than 42,000 British and Greek soldiers on the island – including the bulk of the 2nd New Zealand Division (7700 men). These men, designated Creforce, would be tasked with defending the island against German invasion.
