In 1840 more than 500 chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand’s founding document. Ngā Tohu, when complete, will contain a biographical sketch of each signatory.

Te Ngohi, also known as Kāwhia, signed Te Tiriti at the Waikato Heads mission station in late March or early April 1840. He may have been the father of Ngāti Maniapoto leader Rewi Maniapoto. Te Ngohi originally lived at upper Waipā but after marrying a woman from Ngāti Maniapoto he lived with her people.
