Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Agnes Rutherford was born on 14 October 1857 in Bothkennar, Stirlingshire, Scotland – the daughter of John Rutherford, a coal shipper, and Jane Dunlop.

She married Thomas Sneddon in 1876 and they had a son before they emigrated to Otago in 1878 on the Timaru.

Agnes’ brother George McKay Rutherford was married to her sister in law Margaret Davie Sneddon. (See 117 Mrs G Rutherford)

They settled in Dunedin where their daughter was born and where Thomas worked as a grocer.

When Agnes signed the suffrage petition they were living in Maclaggan St, Mornington.

Thomas died in 1907 after an attack of influenza and Agnes died on 24 October 1916 – they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
