Biography contributed by Bernadette Siebert

Ann Hindle was born in Salford, Lancashire, England in 1849, the second of four children born to Thomas Hindle and Sarah nee Coupe. Thomas, Sarah and their three daughters arrived in NZ on the Gertrude in February 1863. They took up a government land grant in Port Albert.

On 13 December 1865 Ann married Thomas George Hunt who was 25 and a recent settler in Port Albert. He was originally from London, England, son of Abraham and Frances, and had arrived in NZ on the Matilda Wattenbach in 1862 with other Port Albert settlers. Ann was 16 when she married, with the consent of her father.

They lived on 20 acres at Oruawhero, near Port Albert, where nine children were born, with George dying at four years.

  • Alfred Thomas (1867–1951)
  • Elizabeth Ellen (1869–1955)
  • Rutland William (1871–1946)
  • Vivian Edward (1873–1934)
  • George Herbert (1875–1879)
  • Abraham Lewis (1878–1957)
  • Millicent Frances Emma (1881–1947)
  • Cecil James Garfield (1883–1974)
  • Grace Violet (1888–1979)

The youngest child was born after the family moved to Wellsford.

  • Charles Reginald (1890–1959)

On 25 March 1894, Thomas died in Auckland, being of Wellsford. He was 54. He was buried in Waikumete Cemetery in the Christian Bethren tradition. His headstone is inscribed, 'Late of Bow… He giveth his beloved sleep'. Ann was left with seven children under 21. In Thomas’ will he left his estate worth 300 pounds to wife Ann, ensuring she was 'maintaining and bringing up in a manner suitable to their station in life such of my children shall be for the time being been under the age of twenty one years'.

In 1901, at the Port Albert Registry Office, Ann married Edward George Piper, a 44-year-old shoemaker, also widowed. Ann died on 17 December 1922, at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. F. M. Whitehead, Mauku, Piper Port Albert aged 73. She was buried in the Pukekohe Cemetery. Her family erected a headstone that in part reads, 'Beloved mother of the HUNT family….We shall meet on that beautiful shore'. Edward died in 1939, aged 81 and was buried in Port Albert Cemetery.

Ann is the daughter of 24 Sarah Hindle and the sister of 24 Ellen Wright
