Sarah Coupe was born about 1822 in Stockport, Cheshire daughter of Edward Coupe, a dyer and Ann nee Harris.
She married Thomas Hindle in 1846 in Manchester, England. Thomas was 22-years-old, born in Stockport, Cheshire a dyer, son of Thomas, a weaver, and his wife Ellen. They had four children born in Lancashire, with their only son Thomas dying in infancy.

In 1861 the couple were living in Salford, Lancashire with three daughters and Thomas was working as a marine store dealer.
Thomas, Sarah and their three girls arrived in NZ on the Gertrude in February 1863. They took up a government land grant in Port Albert. Thomas was involved in matters in the local area. He was on the school committee and the Port Albert Cooperative Society. In 1882 Thomas was described as a settler residing on 201 acres worth 192 pounds.
Thomas died on 27 February 1889 aged 68. He was buried in the Port Albert Cemetery. In his probate, he left all to wife Sarah for her 'to use and dispose of as she deems fit'. Sarah lived on there until she died 11 March 1898 aged 75, at Port Albert, having outlived three of her four children, and was buried with her husband.
Sarah is the mother of 24 Ann Hunt and 10 Ellen Wright
