Barbara Johnston was born on 23 October 1857 in Haddingtonshire, Scotland – the daughter of Alexander Johnston and Margaret Hardie.
She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1858 on the Jura and they farmed at Puerua where Barbara signed the suffrage petition.
Two of her sisters also signed the petition (See 106 Isa Johnston and 106 Maggie Morton)
Barbara did not marry, she died on 1 August 1948 at her nephew’s home in Hastings. She is buried with her sister Isabella McLaren in the Hastings Cemetery.
