Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Emma Brockley was born in 1869 in New Zealand – the daughter of Charles Brockley, a tinsmith and plumber, and Elizabeth Badger. (See 246 Mrs E Brockley)
When Emma signed the suffrage petition she was living with her widowed mother in Greymouth.
She married William James Gilmore in 1895 and they had five children, one who died in infancy and lived in Invercargill where William was a building caretaker. In 1914 the family decided to move to Wellington as William was suffering from chest troubles.
William died on board the Matai at Port Chalmers – 'a fit of coughing brought on a haemorrhage, and he died in his wife’s arms'.
They family continued to Wellington where Emma died on 24 February 1917 – she is buried with William in the Karori Cemetery.
