Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Elizabeth Badger was born about 1830 in Lancashire, England – the daughter of William Badger & Betty.
She emigrated to Victoria in 1863 on the Tornado where she married Thomas Morrell the following year.
They had a daughter in 1865 but they appear to have separated by 1869.
At this time Elizabeth was in New Zealand and gave birth to her second daughter (See 246 E Brockley) with Charles Brockley, a tinsmith & plumber in Greymouth. Thomas Worrell died in Victoria in 1875 and that year Elizabeth and Charles married.
Charles died in Greymouth in 1879 – he is buried in the Karoro Cemetery.
Elizabeth started business as a 'family grocer & fruiterer' in 1881. She said that 'her arrangements enable her now to carry on her former business of Cleaning Straw Hats, &c.'
Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition in Greymouth.
She moved to Lyttelton in 1907 before which 'a very pleasing ceremony took place' where she was presented with 'a substantial gift as a token of the respect and esteem in which she was held'.
Elizabeth died on 1 September 1907 in Christchurch Hospital – she is buried in the Sydenham Cemetery.
