Ellen Emily Dunstan was born in 1863 in Cornwall – the daughter of Joseph Dunstan, a coal and timber merchant, and Ann Webber.

In 1884 Ellen, accompanied by her sister Louisa (See 360 Louisa Dunstan) boarded the Ruapehu bound for Invercargill.

When Ellen signed the suffrage petition she was living in Gore working as a milliner.

She married farmer William Nicholas on 1 January 1910 in Christchurch.

They lived on the Otago Peninsula then in Oamaru where William died in 1935.

Ellen died in Roxburgh on 8 February 1937 – she is buried with William in the Oamaru Cemetery.
