Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Edith Charlotte Gillam was born in 1870 in Brighton, Sussex, England – the daughter of Frank Gillam and Charlotte Woolger. When she signed the suffrage petition Edith was living with her parents in Great King St, Dunedin.

On 22 May 1899 Edith married David John Simpson, a monumental sculptor, at her parent’s home. They had two children together, one dying at birth.

David died in 1925 and Edith died on 17 August 1948. They are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
