Elizabeth Brown was born about 1825 in Scotland. She married James Johnston in Cranston, Midlothian in 1853 and later that year they emigrated to Otago with their son on the Rajah. They lived at Caversham for a couple of years before they moved to Inch Clutha and they had a further seven children.
About 1869 they bought their farm, 'Rosemains' at Puerua where Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition.
Two of her daughters also signed the petition (See 106 Agnes S Johnston and 106 Ellen Johnston)
Elizabeth died at her home on 20 July 1894 and James died in 1904, they are buried together in the Romahapa Cemetery.
