Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Ellen Mary Huston was born about 1863 in Derry, Ireland – the daughter of James Huston, a labourer, and Margaret Jane Clarke. (See 92 Margaret Jane Clymer)

She emigrated to Otago in 1875 on the Waimea with her family and they settled at Glenore.

Her father died in 1878 and her mother remarried a few years later.

Ellen married Henry Arthur, a labourer and gold miner, on 23 March 1880 in the Waitahuna Parish and they had five children.

When Ellen signed the suffrage petition the family were living at Manuka Creek – they moved to Dunedin in the mid 1900s.

Ellen died at her son’s home in Te Kuiti on 29 August 1912 – she is buried in the Te Kuiti Cemetery.

Henry died in Dunedin in 1917, he is buried with their son in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
