Ellen Wise was born Ellen Voak on 4 March 1848 in Lambeth, London, England to Richard and Caroline Voak. Richard’s occupation was Carpenter.

In 1869 Ellen married George Wise in Chertsey, Surrey. George was the son of William Wise and Eliza Chitty.

In c. 1871 Ellen, George and their son George Richard (born Guildford) came to New Zealand.

Ellen and George had ten children born in New Zealand, Ellen Eliza born 1871, NR male born in 1873, William Henry born 1874, John born 1875, Frederick Thomas born 1877, Charles James born 1878, Mary Elizabeth born in 1881, Emily Agnes born in 1883, Alfred Samuel Skinner born in 1884 and Alice May Voak born in 1886.

In 1880 electoral roll for Heathcote George was living at Sandhills, occupation Gardener. In 1885-86, George has a freehold property at Canal Reserve, Part Rural section 1144. George and Ellen lived at Canal Reserve until their deaths.

Ellen Wise died on 24 April 1915 and is buried in Linwood cemetery, Christchurch, Block 32, Plot 228.

Her husband George Wise died on 12 June 1886 age 45 years and is buried in Linwood cemetery, Christchurch Block 32, Plot 228. George’s occupation was Gardener.

Ellen’s sister Caroline Elizabeth Bateman nee Voak also signed the Petition as did other Bateman family members.
