Emily Davis was born about 1848.

She married Thomas Davis, a widower and hotelkeeper with two sons, in 1871.

They had 2 daughters before Thomas died in 1880. He is buried in the Palmerston Cemetery.

Emily remarried the following year to William Hewitt, a farmer. They had three children and when Emily signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Palmerston.

They later moved to Mangaramarama near Pahiatua, where William died in 1914.

Emily died at the Pahiatua Hospital on September 10th 1941. She is buried with William in the Mangatainoka Cemetery.
