Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Emma Evans was born about 1835 in Radnorshire, Wales – the daughter of Thomas Evans, a wheelwright, and Ann.

She married John Griffiths, also a wheelwright, on 6 October 1853 in Kington, Herefordshire, England.

They had at least eight children before they emigrated to Otago in 1873 on the Lady Jocelyn with six of their children.

When she signed the suffrage petition Emma and her family were living in Laing St, Caversham. Her daughter Ruth also signed the petition.

She died there on 27 September 1898 and John died in 1907. They are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
