Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Harriett Barnes was born in 1865 in Surrey, England – the daughter of William Barnes, a blacksmith, and Jane Gibbons. (See 86 Jane Barnes)

She emigrated to New Zealand with her family in the late 1870s and they settled in Cromwell.

She moved to Mosgiel with her parents where she signed the suffrage petition.

Harriett married farmer Thomas Hazlett in 1905 and they lived at Hillend in South Otago.

Thomas died in Invercargill in 1932 and Harriett also died in Invercargill on 27 August 1955 – they are buried together in the Invercargill Eastern Cemetery.
