Isabella Currie was born about 1833 in Dumfriesshire, Scotland – the daughter of Thomas Currie and Mary Beattie.
She emigrated to Otago with her family in the 1860’s and they settled at Lovell’s Flat in South Otago.
Isabella married James Fenton McLaren, a tailor, on 29 January 1869 in Dunedin and they had six children.
James was a member of the Caversham Borough Council and served one term as Mayor.
When Isabella signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Tay St, Kensington.
James died in 1906 and Isabella died at her home on 24 July 1914 – they are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
